The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the largest grassroots mental health organization in the United States, dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by mental health conditions and supporting their families. Founded in 1979 by family members, NAMI focuses on advocacy, education, support, and public awareness to help individuals and communities understand and address mental illness.

Through a nationwide network of state organizations and local affiliates, NAMI provides free educational programs, peer‑led support groups, community presentations, and public awareness initiatives in hundreds of communities across the country. These programs are designed for people living with mental health conditions, family members, caregivers, educators, and health professionals.

NAMI also operates the NAMI HelpLine, which offers free information, referrals, and emotional support by phone, text, and email, helping individuals navigate mental health services and resources. In addition, NAMI advocates at the local, state, and national levels to promote policies that improve access to care, protect rights, and reduce stigma around mental health.
